WATER QUALITY

Excavating and paving with asphalt the Haggetts Pond rail trail risks our water supply.  The project is proceeding in spite of necessary reviews mandated by our zoning bylaws, which mandate no such construction should occur in the Water Protection Overlay District containing the pond without a formal Planning Board review.

Conservation

The proposed multi-use trail will introduced tens of thousands of square feet of asphalt to protected habitats, create heat zones, and change the aesthetic of the pond area by removing trees lining the current trail.
The design is not required for access and ADA compliance, which could be achieve with modest improvements or by selecting another site for a paved trail.

GOVERNANCE

The plan to replace the peaceful woodland trail with an asphalt paved multi-use path next to our water supply has been rolled out without broad public input or support and in spite of countervaling regulations at the local and state level.  The project has demonstrated that our town has issues with representative government that need to be addressed.
